PENINSULA TREASURES ~ A CULTURAL LOOK
The Palos Verdes Peninsula community learns, celebrates, explores, volunteers and rejoices in its many cultural organizations and activities. The Norris Center for the Performing Arts with its adjacent Harlyne J. Norris Pavilion in Rolling Hills Estates hosts drama, music, and dance programs. This theatre attracts stage and musical performers such as Judy Collins, Tom Jones, Phyllis Diller and Lucie Arnaz. There is also a Fall and Spring Children's Series as well as The Prime Time Players' musicals which have included Mame, Hello Dolly and Oklahoma! Its resident Chamber Orchestra of the South Bay has received three awards from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Norris Center also hosts the Multicultural Association of the Peninsula which organizes Festive Feasts and activities which create cultural awareness and brings a richness and variety of cultural activities. Also, many community groups utilize this facility.
For over 75 years, the Palos Verdes Art Center located in Rancho Palos Verdes, has reached out to its community with its visual arts education programs and offers events, exhibits, art classes and volunteer opportunities. Additionally, the association receives support from a yearly fine art fair, Art for Fun(d)'s Sake, three support groups and seven art groups who present their work weekends in Malaga Cove Plaza in Palos Verdes Estates.
The Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy hosts an exhibit each July by a renowned group of local plein aire artists, the Portuguese Bend Artists Colony. Held in the historic Malaga Cove library, the exhibit offers outstanding landscapes by area artists.
Professional, semi-professional and amateur musicians lend their talents and time to the Peninsula Symphony Orchestra that presents four free annual concerts. Other musical talents are showcased in performances by The South Bay Chamber Music Society, The South Bay Conservatory and Palos Verdes Ballet. The South Coast Botanic Garden is a living laboratory for plant study and conducts educational programs, walks and horticultural classes.
In June of each year, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Chamber of Commerce will present the Annual Palos Verdes Street Fair and Music Festival. This popular family festival, the largest in the region, features a carnival, arts and crafts booths, live entertainment, international food court, dog show and art contest. The event combines the many dimensions of the arts with affordable family fun and brings thousands of visitors to the beautiful Palos Verdes Peninsula.
The Peninsula offers marvelous opportunities for artists and art lovers alike. Artists are often seen painting Pacific Coast scenes from the Palos Verdes cliffs. The Palos Verdes Art Center offers tours of well-known artists' studios and Peninsula businesses often showcase the work of their favorite artists. Galleries in the commercial districts offer work by local artists. Visitors are impressed by the quality of art available. Culture is alive and well on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
